Moody is a city in Etowah County, Alabama, United States. The population was 9,890 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Etowah County. Moody is located on U.S. Route 431 and State Road 231 north of Birmingham and south of Montgomery. The town was founded by Nicholas Moody in 1836 as a small community near what is now Vestavia Hills, Alabama. After traveling to Mobile Bayou to purchase land for his new town, Moody named it after himself and began construction on what would become Moody Village – the first permanent European-American settlement in Alabama outside of Birmingham or Montgomery. In 1838, Moody renamed his new town Etowah after General Andrew Jackson's home state in order to make it more easily accessible from both Birmingham and Montgomery proper; he also hoped that people living nearest him might serve as role models for future settlers thereabouts. Downtown Moody was completed in 1841 with additions such as a courthouse and jail complex; other downtown buildings were built over time including the old post office (1853), Masonic Temple (1858), Hotel Woodward (1868), Patton Theatre (1893), Bank of America Building (1901) and First National Bank Building (1906). Moody saw significant growth during its early years due to its location next to two major transportation arteries: US 431 which connected Mobile Bayou with Birmingham via Cahaba Road through downtown, as well as US 31 which ran east-west through the center of town connecting with I-565/I-459 leading out into nearby Evergreen Valley eventually becoming part of Interstate 95 several miles upstream just before reaching Athens, Georgia.
