Moody was founded in 1836 by John Moody and James W. Moody as a cotton plantation outside of Mobile, Alabama. The name was later changed to Moody's Mill after John Moody's death in 1892. In 1907, the mill became the first commercial cotton gin in Alabama. The mill continued to be operated by the Moody family until it closed in 1966. The first store on Moody Street opened in 1886 and was known as "Ginny's Store". After being bought by J.B. Smith in 1915, Ginny's Store became known as "Jimmie Smith's grocery". In 1917, Jimmie Smith died and his grocery passed along his ownership to his son-in-law, Harry Sims Jr., who renamed it "Harry Sims' Grocery" for a time before changing it back to "Ginny's Store" again after moving out of state. The store closed its doors for good in 1969. In 1925, the then new Moody Airport was built near the town center and eventually became one of the busiest airports in Alabama with its own terminal building and runway which still stands today. The airport also hosted some famous dignitaries such as Ulysses S Grant and Franklin D Roosevelt during their visits to nearby Mobile Bayou during this time period including an air show staged at the airport which is still remembered today!
