Selma, Alabama is a town in and the county seat of Selma County, Alabama. As of the 2010 census, the population was 21,552. Selma is located on the Gulf of Mexico on Mobile Bay and shares borders with Gulfport to the east and Montgomery to the west. The community began as a small dot on map in 1892 when two families bought land for $1 each from Nicholas Pratt. In 1911, an act of Congress designated Selma as "the capital of the Negro Nation." When Selma became a city in 1962 it adopted its current name--Selma after Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s dream that all Americans should be treated equally under law--becoming one of only five cities in America with this title at that time. During World War II, many black soldiers served with military units located throughout Alabama but few if any achieved fame or distinction likeingle Combat Infantryman/Captain George Washington Pinkney (CINCPAC) who fought at Iwo Jima with General MacArthur’s Tenth Army from December 1944-February 1945; or First Lieutenant Archibald Kilpatrick (USAAF), one of two African Americans awarded the Congressional Gold Medal for heroism while serving with Japanese forces during World War II – he distinguished himself by rescuing his unit’s commanding general after they were surrounded on an enemy island at Truk; or Sergeant Clarence Thomas (USMC), court-martialed for refusing an invitation to sing “The Star-Spangled Banner” at a segregated military parade following Pearl Harbor which would have brought attention to his race

Confederate General Robert Ewell defeated Union forces under Major General David Denny at this battle; however, 4 women who were sheltering inside Donelson's fort were killed as a result of this attack. Families from nearby Decatur started moving into Selma soon after the Battle of Selma because it offered easier access to food supplies and transportation than Mobile did for Confederate troops retreating northward following that battle.
