However, despite these challenges, Bullhead City continued to grow rapidly through the 1960s and 1970s until it reached its current size.

Bullhead City is a small city located in Pinal County, Arizona. The population was 8,643 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Pinal County. The area now known as Bullhead City was first settled by the Hualapai people in 1847. The town was founded on the east bank of the Little Colorado River, about two miles upstream from present-day Bullhead City. A post office called "Bullhead City" was established in 1852 and remained in operation until 1912. The first store in Bullhead City opened its doors on May 6, 1852, and served as a general store for settlers near what is now Phoenix. By 1860, there were six stores operating within bullheadsville; all but one were operated by men who had come to avoid military service during the Mexican–American War. In 1865, when Arizona became a U.S.-owned territory, Bullhead City became part of Tucson and continued to serve as its local government center until 1912 when it was replaced by Phoenix. During World War II, Bullhead City played an important role as a munitions production site along the Little Colorado River because of its location close to water supplies for both civilian use and Allied troops fighting in World War II. Beginning in 1944, Price Waterhouseoperated a factory that manufactured chemical weapons at nearby Fort Sill before closing it down due to air raids on Hiroshima and Nagasaki later that year. After Price's closure, many operations at Fort Sill closed as well due to shortages of aluminum needed for weaponry after Japan surrendered in 1945; these closures also left Bullhead City with little economic activity other than serving as an agricultural outlying community until recently when development has resumed along Withrow Boulevard bordered by Interstate 10 on the south side and US-AZ 191 to the north

Bullhead City was founded on September 15, 1912 by George W. Bullock and his brothers as a cattle ranch called "Bullhead Hills". In 1913, the town name was changed to "Bullhead City" after the bullheads that frequent the area. In 1924, Bullhead City became an incorporated city and in 1951 it annexed nearby Payson. On January 17, 1954, Bullhead City became one of fourteen cities in Arizona to become part of the Phoenix metropolitan area; this occurred because Phoenix had been expanding rapidly and needed more areas for growth. The population of Bullhead City increased from 18,521 to 34,518 between 2000 and 2010 according to the2010 US Census Estimates
