Camp Verde was established in 1912 as a summer camp for boys and girls. It quickly became an important stop on the post-World War I trail, serving as a shelter for soldiers and their families, as well as a place to rest and play. In 1916, the camp was renamed Fort Apache after the nearby Apache Mountain fortress. The fort served as the center of government operations at Camp Verde until 1946, when it was transferred to Phoenix. Today, Fort Apache is open to the public as a museum. The first years of Camp Verde were very difficult for the people who lived there. There were no water supplies or electricity, so many people had to rely on candles and firewood to cook their food and heat their homes. However, over time things changed at Camp Verde. The boys and girls started coming together to make friends and have fun. They also started using more natural resources such as waterford cheese andtrapdoor knifes for cooking food instead of candles or pots/pans made from metal or wood. In 1915, General John Pershing decided that Arizona should become part of America because he saw it as an opportunity to expand American influence in central Mexico City (now Mexico City). He ordered all military forces in central Mexico be disbanded except for those responsible for guarding American interests at Fort Apache along with 1,500 cavalry troopers under Lieutenant Colonel George Armstrong Custer. This action created some tension between General Pershing’s American troops and Mexican troops but ultimately helped secure Arizona’s entry into America during World War I despite being politically unstable at that time due to its lack of representation in Congress by either party (the state only had one senator). As America prepared for World War I, Camp Verde grew larger; by 1916 it had facilities including barracks for 480 students plus officers’ quarters (1916-1920), two football fields (1917 & 1920), a gymnasium (1918), kitchens (1918-1920), two storesrooms (1914-1920), a chapel( 1918) – most importantly an inflatable pool which could accommodate up to 350 kids at once – three tennis courts (.67 acre each) designed by architect Harry Sternberg – four rifle ranges (.5 acre each) with 20 rifles each – five stockades (.25 acre each) surrounding 2 miles perimeter around parade ground where games were played outrance every day from 9am until dark; six tents used by staff members only;VALLEY WATER LAGOON: A deep 6 feet wide artificial lake fed from underground springs that filled up rapidly during floods caused by rainsstorms . . .it was said that if you went below low water mark you would find 200 snake eyes hidden inside the shore ;PARK ORDERING ROOMS: Each student received one quartet share of mess hall fare per week which included breakfast burrito's lunch pkg dinner Burritos REFrigerator built in 1917 requisitioned from army surplus store CAMPGROUND: With barbed wire fence surrounding 3/4 mile radius OF POOL ANIMALS included White tailed deer Antelope Coyote , Rockies Elk
