Kingman, Arizona is a small town in Pinal County, Arizona. It is located on the east bank of the Gila River, about 12 miles (19 km) north of Phoenix and 15 miles (24 km) south of Tucson. The population was 3,813 at the 2010 census. The first white man to visit Kingman was José María Harris in 1885. He named it after his friend and fellow soldier Major John C. Kingman of the 1st Arizona Infantry Regiment who had fought with him during the Mexican–American War. Kingman became a mining town in 1892 when two brothers - George Aiken and Frank Hennessey - began developing coal mines along the Gila River. By 1910, Kingman had become one of the most important mining towns in Arizona due to its deposits of coal and other minerals. In 1912, President Woodrow Wilson visited Kingman and announced plans for a new national highway connecting Phoenix and Tucson through Pinal County. In 1941, during World War II, General Dwight D Eisenhower stopped at Kingman on his way to battle against Nazi Germany near Phoenix Airport. Kingman, Arizona is a town located in Cochise County, Arizona. The population was 2,867 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Phoenix metropolitan area. The first European to visit Kingman was José de Anza on July 15, 1769. De Anza sighted what he thought were 300-foot (100-meter) high cottonwoods near the present day intersection of Pima Road and Mohawk Trail. He named this region Santa Cruz y las Vegas because he found religious symbols there among the Indian people. In 1847, Juan Bautista Almendarez founded Serna Station on an island in Apache Lake about four miles from present day Kingman. On December 6, 1847, Almendarez granted patent to Miguel Hidalgo for 7 square leagues (18 km²) of land called Las Vegas de Acuña extending southeast to the Colorado River and northward to meet that river at its junction with the Arizonan Desert; it included all of what now Kingman County except for a small portion east of its current boundaries which are defined by Oracle Hills and Cottonwood Lakes National Monument today. In 1860 Colonel John Wittell established a post office at nearby Pima Creek but it soon became abandoned due to Mexican hostilities along the borderlands between Mexico and Arizona during that era.
