Maricopa County, Arizona is located in the Western United States. It is bordered by New Mexico to the east and north, California to the west and south, and Sonora County to the southwest. The county was named after Santa Cruz de Maricopa, a Mexican missionary who served inArizona in 1847-48. As of 2010, there were a total of 651,715 residents in Maricopa County. The county’s population has grown steadily over recent decades; as of 2000 it had reached 696,814 residents. The history of Maricopa County can be traced back to its creation as part of Arizona Territory on February 12, 1912. At that time, portions of what are now Phoenix and Tucson counties were included within the new territory. The area that would become Maricopa County was first settled by Native Americans; one account suggests that up to 30 tribes lived in or around Phoenix at this time. In 1847-48 Mexican missionaries arrived in Arizona to proselytize for Christianity; one such missionary was Father José Urrea Jr., who founded a mission at Pima Coahuila (now part of Tucson) on March 7, 1847. After serving for two years (1849-50), Father Urrea left Arizona for New Spain (Mexico). He returned seven months later and founded another mission at Nacoalco on January 2nd 1850; this mission became known as Santa Cruz de la Sierra due to its important location overlooking Spanish Presidio San Marcos (present day Mesa Verde National Park). In 1862 land near present day Apache Junction was acquired by Major General Carlos Antonio Tejon during his effort to purchase land east of Phoenix for an agricultural station called Fort Tejon; the fort was ultimately never built but remains evidence of Tejon’s ambition to establish a major military presence in central Arizona. On July 24th 1863 Captain James Waddell discovered gold deposits near Apache Junction which led to extensive mining operations throughout southern Arizonan Valley until 1865 when all but 1/4th of the gold Nuggets found at Apache Junction were developed into coins and jewelry production facilities - these facilities remain today known as Waddell Mines State Monument #2

Maricopa County was created in 1912 from the portion of Pima County east of the Salt River. The county seat was Phoenix. In 1912, Pima and Maricopa Counties were adjacent to each other, but they were amalgamated into one county in 1928.
