The depot was used to store ammunition for military purposes and also served as a stop on the Mormon Trail. It is now a museum. Another interesting item is the Apache Indian Reservation Gunnery School. This school was built in 1907 by the Apache Indians and it functioned as a training ground for their gunners. Today, it still houses part of the Apache Indian militia. The town of Mesa also has a rich ammunition history dating back to at least 1886. Mesa is located on the east side of the Salt River Valley and borders Bisbee to the north, Phoenix to the east, and Prescott Valley to the south. The name "Mesa" comes from Hohokam word "mesa," meaning hill or mound. The town was founded in 1884 by James Wickenheiser and named after his rancho in Apache County. Wickenheiser had been a Mormon missionary in Mexico City and traveled through southernArizona looking for sites for a missionsuary center. He found a tract of land that he called Mesa Verde Rancho de las Animas (Rancho Mesa), which he donated to Pima County as part of his settlement offer to become its first county commissioner. In 1886, when Pima County was created from parts of Cochise and Gila counties, it included most of what are now Mesa, Apache Junction, Cave Creek Village (now Scottsdale), Cottonwood Heights (now Fountain Hills), East Valley Village (now Peoria Junction), Indian Wells Village (now Goodyear) and West Valley Village (now Burbank). Mica mining began in 1887 by Jens Jensen; it continued until 1935 when production stopped because of economic factors such as over-crowding within mines and competition from othermines across AZ., but left an important legacy on Flagstaff's Cache Mine Complex including several molineredandvariscaled rockshelters still extant today near McClintock Ave & Saguaro Rd Flagstaff AZ 85701

Mesa is located on the edge of the Tucson metropolitan area and is bordered by Tempe to the northeast, Apache Junction to the east, Phoenix to the south and west, and Avondale to the north. The history of Mesa begins with Spanish settlers who arrived in 1847. They named it San Carlos de los Ángeles after Saint Raphael's Cathedral in Spain. The city was incorporated as a town on February 14, 1912. It became an unincorporated community on December 5 of that year when its incorporation was revoked by Pima County because of its lack of citizens. In 1924 Mesa Municipal Court judge Julius Jaffe officiated at a local wedding which was held at Gila River Park where he met future wife Flora Daly Jaffe. They were married there two years later on November 6th 1927 under conditions that remain undisclosed today (the couple had no children). Mesa's economy has been based primarily on agriculture for many years since most residents are farmers or ranchers who use their land for grazing or feeding beef cattle and other livestock as well as irrigation water for crops such as wheat and corn. In recent decades however there have been several large-scale developments including: A pair of shopping malls built in 1990s adjacent to each other; Sheraton Hotel & Towers downtown which opened in 2006; Intel Place - one mile east of Downtown Mesa - Home Depot, Lowe's and Toyota Field arena both built in 2013; Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport just outside of town - this airport has served as home to Sunsport Airlines (now Republic Airlines) since 1996; first phase development announced for Southwest Plaza near University Avenue mall - this will include over 100 jobs manufacturing items such as T-shirts but no flights currently scheduled; three new restaurants from chef José Andrés called "Taqueria La Boca" serving Mexican style food inside an Old World styled building formerly used by Lignite Coal Company also known locally as Brushy Ridge Ranch between I-10/US 90 exit 213A and Scottsdale Rd.; these restaurants replacedtwo existing fast food concepts (Chinatown Buffet & Taco Bell) that closed due to low customer demand following extensive renovation work completed throughout Downtown Mesa beginning in late 2017 There are plans underway by developer Navega Group LLC led by CEO Eddie Perezto open up another major retail property across from Interstate 10/US 90 exit 213A with more than 300 jobs planned Phase Two sees redevelopment plans announced for what would once be home to upscale apartments known now as "The Village", developing properties including new apartment buildings featuring high end finishes along with ground floor retail space containing several bars/restaurants all within walking distance of one another You can find out more about Mesa through our website or contact us directly if you would like additional information about our history or want help finding ancestors recently moved here
