With an estimated population in 2010 of 3,814 people, it is the second-most populous community in Pinal County afterScottsdale. Queen Creek was founded by prospectors seeking gold and silver in what is now Phoenix during 1859. The first post office in Queen creek was established in 1860. By 1870, Queen creek had a population of 375 people. In 1873 a church was built at Queen creek and named Holy Cross Catholic Church after Pope Leo XIII's visit to Arizona that year. The first school for children in queen creek was built between 1865 and 1870 by operators of the Cholla Trail wagon road from Tucson to Prescott. It served as a day-school until 1902 whengrades were made into high schools with students attending two years of junior high before proceeding to college or trade school if they desired; this system continued until 1967 when grades were made into middle/junior high schools with students following one year of senior high school before continuing on to college or trade school like their parents had done previously (this change did not take effect until 1982). In 1912 an irrigation canal diverted water from White River Canyon upstream through Queens Creek into Phoenix proper forming what is today's north side of McDowell Road; this helped make Queen Creek more developed than it would have been without the canal and also raised its water level so that beans could be grown near present day Chinle Road which became known as "Queen's Canal". Queen Creek has experienced various changes throughout its history including: ranching; farming; mining; development as an agricultural center forPhoenix; being bypassed for Phoenix traffic by Interstate 10 during construction of I-10 southward from Scottsdale); becoming part of Pinal County when it was divided from Apache county effective January 1, 1912 ; experiencing heavy growth due to completion of I-10 eastward from Scottsdale ; experiencing rapid growth due to subdivisions beginning around 1970 along much thereof becoming single family homes rather than ranches which took many years for those same families to build their own home again once they had moved out because most property values increased only slowly over time (the exception being those areas immediately adjacent to arterial roads such as McDowell Rd., Chaparral Hwy., etc.)
