In 1868 Kingman Indian trader Wofford Otero brought over fourteen horses from New Mexico Territory and began trading with local farmers along Route 66 near present day Kingman about seventy miles east-northeast of Phoenix along what are now Scottsdale Road and Valley View Drive .
