In 1978, Queen Creek voters passed an ordinance establishing a government-owned park that now includes over 20 miles of hiking trails including some that are wheelchair accessible. Today, Queen Creek remains an important center for ranchers and other rural residents who continue to use its resources for their own needs while also enjoying visitor attractions such as swimming holes and picnic areas.
Queen Creek is located in the Tumwater Valley, about halfway between Phoenix and Tucson. The valley was formed by the confluence of the rivers White River and Colorado River. In 1847, Mexican General Antonio López de Santa Anna ordered his forces to cross the river at Queen Creek in order to attack Prescott. The Mexicans were successful in capturing Prescott but failed to take Arizona, which was claimed by Mexico. Queen Creek served as a crossing for wagon trains moving between Arizona and California during the Gold Rush period. In 1912, Kingman Dam was built on the White River near Queen Creek. This dam created a lake that allowed irrigation agriculture to grow around Queen Creek. The dam also provided power for local electric companies until 1978.
