Sahuarita is a town in Pinal County, Arizona, United States. The population was 1,813 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Phoenix metropolitan area. The community was founded in 1881 by Mormon settlers from Salt Lake City, Utah. Sahuarita became a small settlement with only about thirty residents when it was established on the banks of the Colorado River. By 1915, Sahuarita had grown to over two hundred people and had added a post office and several businesses to its mix. In 1935, Sahuarita incorporated as a village under the name "Sahuarita." At first it did not have any schools or health care services; however, through donations and fundraisers from its citizens and local business owners, Sahuarita began to build up infrastructure that would later become essential for its growth. The town’s nickname “The Friendly Village” comes from how much effort its inhabitants put into making their community feel like home. They hosted events such as summer concerts and annual chili cook-offs in order to generate interest in their community among visiting tourists and locals alike. Despite this friendly attitude towards outsiders, there were also times when residents could be quite intolerant of newcomers who didn't share their values or lifestyle (such as African Americans). This wasn't always easy for either group to get along – but eventually both groups came to understand each other better and found common ground. Today, Sahuarita has seen some growth thanks to new development around it such as an apartment complex housing over one thousand units; new retail spaces including a grocery store; new restaurants such as Chili's Pizza & Grill; and an upcoming golf course which will add more than three hundred jobs directly onto the local economy. The first Spanish settlers in Sahuarita, Arizona were Francisco Vásquez and Antonio de la Garza. In 1821, Manuel Nieto surveyed the area and named it Pima County after the Pima people. The county was created on February 14, 1822 from parts of Apache County and Maricopa County. On November 1, 1912, Sahuarita's incorporation as a town was approved by the Arizona Territory Legislature. On December 5, 1912, the town had its first election and was admitted to the Union as a city on December 12. The population of Sahuarita reached 10,000 by 1915. During World War I, local businesses manufactured munitions for the war effort and employed many locals. After the war ended in 1918, most of these businesses closed down due to high taxes levied by newly elected Governor James Ahern Heaton. In 1925 oil began production at nearby Anadarko Petroleum Corporation’s wellheads northeast of Sahuarita; this led to increased development in downtown Sahuarita with new hotels and restaurants being erected along Navarro Street between San Pedro Drive and First Avenue North; however not all residents were supportive of this development which caused some crime rates to increase during this time period. This led to Mayor Manuel Sanchez creating a “watchman” program that monitored police activity in order to prevent crime from happening. In 1957 major construction began on what is now known as Western Side High School when Scottsdale Unified Schools District purchased land adjacent to Western Side Elementary School for use as their new school system headquarters; at this time much of downtown Sahuarita became abandoned due to lack of business interest or redevelopment opportunities around this time period. In 1975 Western Side High School was opened when Central Arizona High School (later Phoenix Central) moved into their current building south of First Avenue North on Eastern Boulevard just east of Scottsdale Boulevard; during this time much more commercial development took place around Downtown including several large office buildings such as 20th Century Fox Studios (later 20th Century Fox Cinema), Shoprite Super Markets (now Kroger), Mesa Community College - East Campus (now Mesa Community College - West Campus), Phoenix State University - Tempe campus (now Phoenix State University - Southeast Campus) among others which continues today until present day with little sign or change in crime rates other than an increase in student enrollment rates since then
