The first scopes were designed and built in the Spanish town of Sahuarita, Arizona in 1859. The instrument was called a “telescope” because it used a telescope lens to view objects up close. In 1902, Sahuarita became the home of the then United States Coast Guard Station at that time. This led to the development of early scopes that were used by officers on duty as well as civilians. In 1941, an American military training station was established in Sahuarita. This led to the construction of two astronomical observatories: one at Mesa Verde National Park and another at Pima County Park. These telescopes have since been used for research and astronomy education purposes by students from all over America. Today, there are more than 100 astronomical observatories located throughout North America using various types of scopes. The Alltel Corporation produced three 30 inch Schmidt-Cassegrain telescopes between 1951 and 1957; these were renamed the "Alltel Prime" models. One of these was sold to University of Northern Colorado from 1957 until its sale to Raytheon in 1988 as the "Raytheon Prime". The Raytheon Prime is currently housed at Scotts Valley Museum of Natural Sciences inScotts Valley, California where it is on display along with other historically important astronomical equipment

Sahuarita, Arizona is a small town located in Pinal County, Arizona on the eastern edge of the Tucson metropolitan area. The population was 7,813 at the 2010 census. The name Sahuarita comes from Spanish meaning "place where there are grapes" and refers to a local grape vineyard. The town began as a cattle station on what is now the north side of Sahuarita Valley. In 1881, Wm. H. Condon built an adobeen mission here and named it San Xavier de los Muertos after St. Xavier, one of his Jesuit patrons. The mission was destroyed by Apache Indians in 1886 but replaced by Sahuarita Mission School in 1911-12 which became a national monument in 1931 following the passage of Publius Clotus' Indian Removal Act (Public Law 89-291). In 1887, Isidoro Martinez bought 4 acres of land east of present day Sahuarita and founded what would become Martinez Rancho Apache near present day Tuscon Avenue and Alpine Road. He raised beef cattle until 1893 when he moved his herd west to establish what is today's Ocotillo Valley National Monument northwest of Tucson alongmile long Route 66 corridor then known as Stagecoach Rd.. In 1916 Santiago Hernandez established another rancho east of present day Sahuarita called Los Alamos Ranches that operated until 1923 when it too was lost to ranching history due to fire suppression measures enacted during World War II within Army zone 10b (present day Phoenix) . After World War II the land reverted back to private hands with development beginning only gradually throughout the 1960s with major efforts surrounding the establishment in 1967-68 of Donnybrook Fairgrounds adjacent to modernday Sahuariti High School just south of US Highway 66 exit 82B/SR 191 about two miles east/west from downtown . It wasn't until 1971 that consideration was given for developing this area into an urban center with plans eventually moving forward including office buildings, shopping centers and an airport; however no action followed until 1984 when plans were reworked again resulting in incorporation as city limits within Tucson proper creating some new challenges such as street numbering etc.; nevertheless growth continued unabated through much later years culminating in 2002 with annexation by City Limits Incorporated which effectively created fully functioning city government effective February 1st that year
