Kapp built his homestead there on the property that he acquired from Goldschmidt in 1918. Kapp's Rancho del Rey Adobe began construction in 1922 and was completed five years later; it served as the nucleus for what would become known as Pomona Hills subdivision which hugs sides of Interstate 10 south of present day Somerville. A second Adobe Detachment (now part of Monument Valley National Monument) also began construction soon afterwards on what became known as Rancho de la Luna off State Route 66 just north of Somerville proper; this two-story adobeadobe cost $2600 per acre ($1 million today). In 1935, American duellist/polo player Vernon Johnson arrived in Phoenix with his wife Gertrude and their three children after traveling through Mexico City on their way to compete against Spanish nationals at an event organized by Al Capone's new business venture – 'The Mexican Ring'.
