A year later, Tempe incorporated as a town under the name Apache Junction due to its location on top of a hill overlooking Apache Pass and Apache Lake. In 1887, John Wesley Powell arrived in Arizona with his party of Ulysses S. Grant’s officers on his way to explore what would become Yosemite National Park and named the high mountain region by him after Mesa Verde National Park—the highest peak in that state—which he had seen from Apache Junction Peak: "Mesa Verde" means "high mountain." When Grant's army reached Prescott during their march through central Arizona late November 1887 they camped near today's east side of Camelback Road while they awaited supplies that were being brought up by wagon trains overland from California via Prescott Valley; at least some rooms and furnishings still remain within walls of this old military post (and visitor center) off Interstate 10 just south of Scottsdale Avenue NE which was once called Gila River Road but now known as I-10 Eastbound lanes exit ramp for Surprise Valley Drive). From here an Indian trail led down into present-day Mesa County where Mormon settlers began arriving about 1840 followed by others soon thereafter including Doniphan & Humboldt men who prospected for gold along both sides of Mohawk Creek below modern day Peoria Road bridge across Mohawk Creek which flows into Arizonan desert just northwest of Surprise Valley Drive today known as I-10 Westbound lanes exit ramp for Chandler Boulevard North/Southwestern Expressway east side). Mormon missionaries also founded Crown Point near present day Glendale Heights northeast cornerof Glendale Boulevard Northeast/southwest cornerof Indian School Rd./Route 66 today known as Rose Bowl Dr./Montebello Trails Way SW about 5 miles west from current site.) After Mexican independence most Arizonans identified themselves primarily as Mexican Americans rather than Anglo American however many small towns such as Apache Junction continued to operate until after World War II when efforts were made to get rid Of Mexicans generally throughout much or all southernArizona making Phoenix one large Mexican American community although smaller communities continued operation until after 1980s when Hispanics moved out primarily because job opportunities became scarce in Sun Belt cities following economic downturn caused by Automation & Other changes etc.) Although Mexico has since disappeared most Arizonans carry some heritage related to their historical land grantees such asAztec people who live around Yuma River valley especially around ancient Mayan ruins now part of Moab National Monument while other groups such as Navajo people live nearer Flagstaff adjacent to Mogollon Rim National Park) In 1912 Gilbert Field opened located east off State Route 86 next door to then independent Allentown restaurant which still stands today (now Jamba Juice) opposite Goodyear tire factory across SR 86 southeast cornerfrom ASU campus now home to Marriott Marquis Resort & Spa) Also 1911: First airmail service between Phoenix and Tucson started here providing mail service only betweenPhoenix&Tucson airports In 1915: Gila River Pipeline was completed linking PHX with TPHX forming first interurban bus line between major US Cities
The Tempe area is located in Maricopa County, Arizona. The city of Tempe was founded on November 3, 1897 by James Waddell and his wife Nellie E. Wright. The city was named after the Mount Washington holiday parade which took place every year in Phoenix at that time. In 1912, Tempe annexed the towns of Agua Caliente and Mesa Verde to its limits. On December 15, 1912, the City Council approved a resolution to name the new city "Tempe."
