During this time period, industry increasingly replaced agriculture as primary economic activity in Benton; brick making became an important component of local society during this time period . In 1916, following World War I and brought about by increased trade with Europe and new technology developments such as automobiles both within America and abroad, Bendone's commercial district saw rapid growth which led to increased housing prices throughout much of downtown Bendone proper as well as adjacent neighborhoods such as Park Ridge-Fenton Avenue/Highway 9 northward until that section came under control from Memphis after World War II . In addition to this accelerated development process there also arose social tensions resulting from changes wrought upon postwar American society by racial integration movements sweeping across Southern states after World War II . These social changes created tension within preexisting communities as people who had nothing to do with those newly arrived newcomers started making advances into formerly white-dominated professions while continuing to rely heavily upon traditional activities such as farming which they believed would remain immune from change . As these tensions mounted many businesses closed their doors or relocated out of state while others chose not to participate because they felt it would be impossible for them to compete against overwhelming black competition emanating from newly opened black enclaves throughout Memphis metropolitan area without breaking away completely from their original community structures
