The first recorded visit to Cabot by Europeans was in 1694 by Captain John Smith and his party on their journey from Jamestown to England. In 1810, James Waddell and Robert E. Lee's group of Confederate soldiers passed through Cabot on their way to fight for the South in the American Civil War. Cabot had a post office from 1827 until it closed in 1893. A sawmill and gristmill were built here around 1840; both went out of business during the Great Depression. The mill building still stands,although it has been converted into a home. In 1865, General Nathan Bedford Forrest made his headquarters here during the Flanders Campaign against Union forces under Ulysses S. Grant; he is buried at Elm Grove Cemetery in nearby Arkadelphia. In 1902, President Theodore Roosevelt visited Cabot while on campaign trail in Arkansas; he later told an interviewer that he thought "the people of Arkansas are quite as intelligent as any I have met" hereabouts and that "the jumble [of] characters" there "seems like something out of Dickens." In 1915, when World War I began with Austria-Hungary entering into war against Serbia (a member of the Triple Alliance), Cabot residents raised money to send food parcels to troops fighting on all fronts overseas; they also collected money for local charities throughout the conflict (see World War I).
