By 1800 several settlements had been established near present day Jacksonville; these included Fort Walton Beach (1798), Indian Rocks (1801), Pensacola (1805), Saint Peters Creek (1810) and New Madrid (1812). A number of other Englishmen followed Caldwell to Alabama around this time – some settling at Muscle Shoals Sound near present day Birmingham – but by 1816 all British posts within Louisiana had been evacuated except for Fort Stedman at Gonzales Point on Lake Charles which continued to serve as a military base for Anglo-Lakota settlers until it was surrendered in 1836 Associated Tribes member Louis Hennessey arrived in early 1840 looking for land west of Mobile Bay where he could establish himself among friendly Native American tribes; he founded what is today Jackson County with headquarters at Whatley’s Landing on Mud River north of modern day Stroudsburg In 1861 Confederate forces under General Robert Ewing invaded Arkansas Territory along with Confederate forces under General Don Carlos Buell across Texas border; both armies were seeking refuge from President Abraham Lincoln’s call for troops against secessionist movements throughout America On March 24th 1861 General Robert Ewing ordered the burning of federal buildings south of Memphis while Confederate forces burned Federal buildings north of Memphis Both militaries withdrew their respective commands two days later when Lincoln called up more troops without specific instructions to do so On April 8th 1861 General Sterling Price drove Confederate forces out of Tennessee after culminating Battle Of Lookout Mountain; Price subsequently took over command from Ewing east of Knoxville The remaining Federal garrison within Shelby County retreated back inside Shelbyville courthouse towards Chattanooga while Price proceeded northwest towards Nashville On April 9th 1861 Sheriff John Chilton tried unsuccessfully to arrest Price outside Government House during clashes betweenPrice's cavalry unit and local militia force On May 3rd 1861 Governor Oran Peebles sent $1 million worth gold coins as ransom for releaseof four hostages taken by Confederates during skirmish at Snively Bridge northeast Oklahoma City
