Pine Bluff is a small town in Pulaski County, Arkansas, United States. The population was 1,828 at the 2010 census. It is the seat of Pulaski County. The first European Americans to live in Pine Bluff were two men, David Roper and John Wesley Powell, who came overland from Missouri in 1836. They built a cabin on the bluff above the present day town in what is now known as NW First Street and SW Second Avenue. The area around Pine Bluff was mostly undeveloped until 1881 when J.W. Stephenson developed the land east of downtown for a coal mine that would become one of the largest collieries in America. The community grew quickly due to its location near an important railroad junction and by 1860 had six churches, thirty-six schools, and three hotels/cabins. By 1886 there were over one thousand residents living in pine forest about north of town center on high ground overlooking Coal River Valley and Coal Creek Valley (now Lake Cumberland). In 1907 lumber production became an important part of local economy with mills producing cedar, oakum (a type of oil), hickory, sycamore and other hardwood products; sawmill capacity totaled 2 million board feet per year by 1915. In 1916 Pine Bluff hosted its first annual Cotton Bowl Game between Vanderbilt University (then called Vanderbilt Volunteers) and Texas A&M Aggies; this event remains one of college football's most prestigious contests today drawing almost 50% of all bowl game attendances each year nationwide. From 1927 through 1957 PineBluff was home to both the Arkansas Razorbacks men’s basketball team and women’s basketball team before those teams moved to Little Rock for their current locations adjacent to Keene Coliseum commemorating A&M’s then-largest victory against any major university up until that time nationally as well as UA’s first ever NCAA Tournament appearance including eight consecutive seasons winning championships from 1923-1927 inclusive; both programs lost all seven games they played at Keene Coliseum during that period! In 1941 Pine Bluffs post office moved from Northwest First Street next door to Ebenezer Baptist Church across Lewis Avenue into newly constructed Russell Hines Post Office on SW Third Avenue which still stands today providing convenient customer service along with postal facilities including an express mail service as well as storage for mailbags while also hosting numerous events throughout the year such as family reunions when necessary and special occasions like President's Day or Christmas etc... Pine Bluff is a town in Pulaski County, Arkansas, United States. The population was 8,859 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Pulaski County. The original post office was established in 1881 and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1907. The town originated on Pine Creek, east of what is now Pine Bluff. A school and courthouse were built there in 1882; the first post office opened in that year. By 1890, however, residents had started to move away from the creek's banks for economic reasons and a new town site was developed on land east of present-day downtown Pine Bluff. The name "Pine Bluff" was chosen because of its resemblance to a bluish hillock near Jackson, Mississippi. The first settler to live in what is now Pine Bluff (then called White Sulphur Springs) was Benjamine Hargrave on July 10, 1881. He erected a cabin on his farmstead just outside the present-day city limits of Pine Bluffs on December 12th of that year. That same year the Arkansas Territorial Legislature passed an act setting up a district court for Pulaski County, including Butteville and White Sulphur Springs; Hargrave served as one of its justices. In 1889 local resident John Cramer donated land to became downtown PineBluffs' central square; this area still contains evidence from early pioneer days: pioneer Christopher Clyde Smith dug two wells hereabouts during 1892–93 as part of his efforts to improve water supplies for his growing community idea which he termed "the black gold project." In 1903 Appalachian Coal Company founder Ladd Sinton laid down coal reserves northeast of where today's downtown situate east side streets parallel but divergent from current Broadway Avenue include parts now known as Wacker Drive NE & NW then SW corner lot #7 & NW corner lot #8 now blockaded by Pinnacle Hill Rd
