Russellville is a town in Pulaski County, Arkansas, United States. The population was 1,834 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Little Rock–North Little Rock–Pulaski, AR Metropolitan Statistical Area. Russellville was established in 1881 and incorporated as a town on November 3, 1906. The initial site for Russellville was on the east bank of the Arkansas River just north of present-day Russellville Boulevard. A post office called Russellville had been established in 1881, and remained in operation until it closed on October 25, 1907. Russellville first became an agricultural center due to its location close to water resources and its relationship with nearby Fort Smith. In 1916, the construction of Fort Smith's first major arsenal produced a large increase in local trade and commerce. In 1920,angler Junior College opened in Russellville; this led to increased demand for education within the town. By 1930, many businesses had closed because of the Great Depression; however, because of new investments by local boosters such as Humble Oilman Will Rogers Jr., business started to rebound soon after that time. During World War II (1939-1945), much activity occurred within or near Russellville due to military production; including fighter planes being built at Fort Smith Airport and artillery magazines being constructed at Powder Springs ArsenalPeninsula Ammunition Plant located south of town across from White Sands Missile Range; both facilities were important for supplying ammunition for American forces fighting against Nazi Germany and Japan during World War II In 1957, when Pulaski County formed from portions of Arkansas Territory following statehood it included parts of what were then eastern Pulaski County including Russelvill
