Brentwood is a city in Orange County, California. The population was 24,876 at the 2010 census. Brentwood is located on the east side of Los Angeles proper and is bounded by Interstate 10 to the north, Santa Ana Boulevard to the east, and Crenshaw Boulevard to the south. The area now called Brentwood was first settled in 1868 when prospectors discovered oil wells in what is now eastern Riverside County. The name "Brentwood" was applied to a small tract of land near present-day Glendale Heights because of its remote location from other parts of Orange County. In 1870, two men named William Halsell and George Wills bought 6 acres (2 ha) of land in what is now Brentwood for $1 per acre ($24/km²). They started a new town and named it after their home state of Vermont. The first store opened in November 1871. By 1886, Brentwood had a population of 350 people and six stores. In January 1889, an agreement was made between local boosters John Pemberton and Richard Mathers that would allow Pemberton to develop land east of Glendale Heights for housing development with 5% Of all proceeds going to charity In 1893–1894, architect Arthur Logan designed four blocks west of Glendale Heights on lands that were then part of Pemberton's subdivision also known as Crenshaw Gardens which became known as Brentwood after him In 1896–1897 Jens Jensen purchased 4 lots adjacent to Building A on Elm Street from Henry Madden for $2 per lot (the current day address: 118 Elm Street). At this time Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney lived across Elm Street from Jensen family members including her sister Louise Whitney who later married Adolphus Newmark A streetcar stop calledaiden "Jensen's Corner" existed at this spot until 1907 when it was replaced byan intersection with Glencoe Avenue
