It has been called "the cultural capital of Orange County." The first Europeans to visit what is now Brentwood were traders and missionaries who traveled along what is now Interstate 10 in 1818. They named this area after a small stream that ran through present-day Brentwood. In 1825, Pio Pico made an ill-fated attempt to cross Lake Arrowhead from today's Riverside County into San Bernardino County on horseback and be the first European to see Los Angeles Harbor. His expedition failed because he was too late for winter supplies sledding upriver from Mt Baldy and his party was unable to find mines or other resources necessary for such an arduous journey. In 1848, when gold was discovered near Saugus,California by prospectors John Wesley Powell and George Priestman, local farmers petitioned Mexican officials for permission to build a road across their land so goods could be transported between Saugus and Fillmore without having to go through Bakersfield or Pasadena. The granting of this request allowed settlers from Tijuana overlanders – primarily menagerie artist Antonio López de Santa Anna who had sailed down river with General Mariano Vallejo on his flagship "Elcano" – access to farmland which they would later use as pastureland for their horses, cattle and sheep while Mexicans built roads connecting Bakersfield with Mexico City. In 1870 Californian prospector James Waddell platted what became Brentwood on 160 acres (70 ha) north of downtown Los Angeles Airport where today's University Boulevard forms its eastern border; Waddell named it after himself’s father-in-law Jeremias Hidalgo y Costilla who had settled in Gasparilla Cove east of Los Angeles Harbor some years before. As early as 1871 local residents began building homes using adobe construction techniques; clapboarding was not popular among these early settlers because it required many hours outside during hot days working on individual houses with no air conditioning or protection against cold weather during winter months; however building code changes soon changed that: “By 1875 clapboarding had become almost universal throughout southern California due both to its costliness ($2 per sq ft per year) and lack thereof any practical advantages compared with other types of construction... Because there existed little need for privacy walls between dwellings or cars inside driveways—gutters draining onto streets were common—clapboarding became part” During World War II many industries moved out west including shipbuilding but Brentwood remained largely intact until 1945 when Japanese American families moving from inland cities went into businesses within town limits selling food products like tofu from their homes front yards Today much growth has occurred within the traditional city boundaries including new housing developments such as Park House Place (@ La Brea Avenue & North Figueroa Street) which opened in 2003 adjacent to USC's Robertson School Of Business offering studentship opportunities for young entrepreneursrepreneurs ; Koreatown @ Van Nuys Boulevard & Ventura Boulevard - Koreatown neighbors UCLA - Koreatown annexed neighboring South CentralLos Angeles neighborhood Pomona Hills circa 1990 However much recent development still takes place within enclaves off-limits/off grid like Midtown West (@ Olympic Boulevard & Vermont Avenue) which offers panoramic views overlooking Downtown LA
