On October 15th 1886 Mrs. Jennie Calder gave birth to their only child named George Haddon Brent who would go on to be an amazing civic leader for his hometown of Brentwood including being elected Mayor 3 times (1910-15 & 1923-27), Vice President of Ventura County (1920-24) and Treasurer/Clerk for then State Senator Hiram Johnson during World War II before becoming an accomplished real estate developer himself later called "TheMayorOfBrentwood". Brentwood was a small community in the San Fernando Valley region of Southern California. It was located east of Hollywood and west of Pasadena, on the border of Boyle Heights to the north and Westlake Village to the south. Brentwood's ZIP Code is 91017. The community had a population of just over 1,000 people in 2010. The first settlers in Brentwood were farmers who came from Illinois in 1847. They ranched their land and raised pigs and chickens until they decided to settle down and start a town. The name Brentwood derived from an oldSpanish settlement called "Bretana". There were also Italian immigrants who settled here, as well as German immigrants who arrived after World War I. In 1948, Brentwood became an incorporated city with its own government. In 1951, it adopted a new downtown plan which included the construction of several blocks of expensive office buildings along Main Street between Flowery Branch Avenue and La Brea Avenue. At that time, Brentwood also began developing its energy resources with the installation of two oil rigs on top of hills near Nutley Drive Just outside town limits—the first such installations in Southern California for more than fifty years! During the late 1960s through early 1970s, Brentwood experienced rapid growth due to its location within easy driving distance of Los Angeles County's major metropolitan areas (and especially Beverly Hills) as well as its reputation for high-end shopping malls including Gartner Center (now known as Sears), Capitol Mall (now known as Macy’s), Robertson Boulevard mall (now part of Kmart), and Regal Cinemas.[1][2] However, by 1975–1976 Brentwood had lost most if not all its residents to nearby IngleWOOD or Carson City because those areas had become much more populous while Brentwood's population continued slowly declining; by 1978 only about 100 people lived in town proper while 1,500+ lived around satellite towns like Walnut Creek and El Monte.[3][4] "Brentwood went through what you might call a phase where things changed rapidly," says Rick Steves during his visit this year when he visited Greater Los Angeles County Chamber Orchestra at Gartner Center."There was no longer anything that made it economically feasible to live there other than jobs created by LACO."[5]
