It is part of the Los Angeles-Fremont-Salinas Metropolitan Area. Brentwood was founded in 1887 by George Brent and his brother Harry. The city was originally named Westchester, after New York's Bronx borough. In 1925, Brentwood renamed itself to honor William H. Brent, who had been elected Mayor of Los Angeles County in 1922 and 1923 and had supported Ronald Reagan for President during the 1984 U.S. Presidential campaign. In 1990, Brentwood became one of 25 cities to be added to the American City University System (ACUS). The city has a rich history dating back to its early days as a trading post on the Santa Monica River between present-day downtown LAPL and Hollywood Heightsamidst cotton plantations operated by Don Pedro de la Vega and his son José de la Vega y Costilla; Rancho La Brea also grew up around this time period near today's El Sereno Boulevard/Rancho Horseback Trail junction. The first permanent settler in what is now Brentwood was George Brent himself with his family from England who arrived on July 24th 1887 while hunting deer at what is now Olympic Boulevard and Lankershim Drive in present day Hollywood Hills; they were followed two weeks later by Harry Bland with his family from Stoke Poges parish near Plymouth in Devon England which settled down along Lankershim Drive just east oftoday's Reseda Boulevard/Highway 13 junction - these initial families were joined soon thereafter by other English settlers including Mrs John Atkinson who came with her husband Captain Joseph Atkinson from Southsea aboard HMS "Concorde" on September 27th 1887 after spending six months ashore at Vera Cruz prior to their ship arriving there October 5th 1887; Mrs Atkinson's group landed onshore north of where today's Sepulveda Boulevard meets Interstate 5 south of Laurel Canyon; Capt Atkinson's group then continued inland until they reached what is now northwest corner of Beverly Dr./northwest corner of Vineyard Rd./southwest corner Of Wilshire Blvd.; where they built their first house sometime around late November or December 1887.- This area would come to be known as "Eccles Lawn". Lt Col Joshua Chamberlain (1811-1892) Colonel US Army during Mexican War: Joshua Chamberlain commanded 1st Battalion California Volunteers at Chihuahua Campaign & Battle of Monterrey which resulted in General Mexicano being captured & executed
