Leland Stanford Sr.'s family purchased the patent rights in 1931 for use with their new Fordson tractor company's vehicles (). By 1937, California State Normal School (later California State University) was opened at what is now Northridge Boulevard and Crenshaw Boulevard on what would later be called campus near which much development took place: several small schools were consolidated into one large school district (Northridge Union High School District), Interstate 5 was built through this area along with numerous other giant projects such as Southern Pacific Railroad's Carlsbad Line Extension through Cerritos and then on to Riverside County; two Kaiser Aluminum Works facilities were built here: Alcoa's initial aluminum plant started production in 1941; World War II saw extensive military activity including hundreds of workers brought over from Japan who constructed an airfield just north of town (); after the war ended came a period where many businesses closed down but also when Cerritos slowly began to experience significant growth: industrial parks were established all around town while shopping malls began popping up throughout southern California; finally, recent economic times have seen another resurgence with businesses expanding outside the downtown core; cerrito Creek has become increasingly polluted due to agricultural runoff but this has led to some redevelopment efforts surrounding its waterside neighborhoods
