Cerritos, California is a city in the county of Kern and the larger metropolitan area of downtown Los Angeles. As of 2010, its population was 523,871. The city is located on the eastern edge of what used to be the Mojave Desert, about 25 miles (40 km) east-northeast of Downtown LA and 10 miles (16 km) south-southeast of Downtown LA's business district. Cerritos has a Mediterranean climate with mild winters and hot summers. The name Cerritos comes from Spanish meaning "place where the cowherds graze." The first Europeans to visit Cerritos were Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo and his men on September 3, 1542 when they landed at Point Mugu on Catalina Island. They named it San Miguel de los Palmes because they saw a light in the sky that looked like an olive branch coming down from heaven. In 1887–88 Avis Car rental company opened its first office in Cerritos after starting out as a small adobe shack near East Main Street and Highway 101. The company grew into one of Southern California's largest operators with over 100 locations by 1920. In 1951 City Councilman William Henson sponsored a resolution creating what would become known as "The Meadowlands" park lands southeast of downtown Los Angeles which became home to many local businesses including Jiffy Lube hamburgers, United Artists Theatre and Staples Center before it was developed into other neighborhoods such as Echo Park and Midtown Los Angeles proper. It was not until 1984 when then Mayor Tom Bradley created Park La Brea which included much of what is now Cerritos Blvd., Crenshaw Boulevard, Highland Avenue/Highway 241/Los Alamitos Ave., Elysian Valley Drive/UCLA Medical School Road, Sims Way South off Orangetheory Rd., Vinegar Hill Rd., Sweetwater Creek Rd./Market St., Glendale Dr./Hollywood Hills Blvd.. In 1990 developer Villagewest Communities purchased 8 acres (3 ha) northeast of Anaheim Hills for $2 million from Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum trustee John Gorman in order to create an urban village composed mostlyof high-rise condominiums built adjacent to Interstate 5 freeway exits providing easy access to West Hollywood shopping districts; Disneyland; Universal Studios Hollywood; Playa del Rey beach; Northridge mall; Redondo Beach Municipal Airport; Cypresswood Canyon Resort Spa & Casino
