Cerritos, California is a city in the southern San Fernando Valley of Los Angeles County, California. Cerritos was founded on November 3, 1887 by George Arnold and James Fenton. The name honors Rancho Cerrito de los Cahuillas Mexican land grant given to George Arnold in 1847. At its peak, Cerritos had an estimated population of over 100,000 people. The city has since shrunk to around 50,000 people and it is the poorest municipality in Los Angeles County. The City of Cerritos was organized on February 2, 1907 using land that had been annexed from neighboring El Monte by the City of Los Angeles. On October 1st 1915 voters adopted a proposition for incorporation that became effective November 3rd with a population of 606 residents: "That the City be incorporated as a city." The first mayor was Wm. Halsey Slocum followed by Frank Bowers who served from 1916-1920 then Harry Jahn who served from 1920-1924; both men were Democrats. In 1940 Mayor Denny Doyle resigned after being indicted on bribery charges following his campaign for re-election against Republican incumbent Arturo Fraga but he later pardoned him and replaced him with John Engler who also served as mayor during Doyle's term but no longer counts as part of the official history because Engler vacated his office before running for re-election in 1946 and so his term officially ended on December 31st 1945 rather than January 1st 1946 which would have made him one year older than Doyle and would have disqualified him from running again since he could not serve consecutive terms without passing away or being impeached (the Beverly Hills Charter Amendment granted Halliburton Corporation ownership of half of La Brea Tar Pits lands east of 8th Street along Miracle Mile making it impossible for any individual to serve more than two terms).

It experienced rapid growth during World War II due to military production at nearby Los Angeles Airfield. During this time, cerritos also became well known for its annual Christmas Parade which is now one of Southern California's most popular events. Cerritos lost its status as an official city after it ceased to be involved in municipal government and began to rely more upon annexation or other forms of self-government within Kern County overall througherkerngov .
