He settled near present-day Escondido and renamed it La Jolla after his home island of Tenerife off Spain's Canary Islands. By 1865, Gómez had purchased more than 6,000 acres (2 km²) of land east of San Diego City Limits including what is now Cerritos Valley. In 1881, Avis car dealership owner George Haigh leased land near present-day Villa Park on Center Street between Interstate 5 and Stadium Road for use as a racetrack touristic destination called "Haigh's Hill".
