Cerritos is located on the San Gabriel River just east of downtown Los Angeles and west of Pasadena. It is one of the most ethnically diverse cities in Southern California. The first Europeans to arrive in Cerritos were two Spanish soldiers who found a small community of Californio Indians living near what is now Lennox Boulevard and Broadway Avenue in 1821. They named the area La Rancha de la Calavera because they noticed three calaveras on a hill nearby (the skulls of those killed by an Indian attack had been left there). A year later, another group led by José Garza discovered land that would become Cerritos when he drove off a band of Tongva Indians near present-day Prendiville Road and Menard Boulevard. garza called his new discovery Nuestra Señora de las Nieves (Our Lady of Lourdes), which means "New Home" or "New Settlement". In 1826, developer Juan Justo founded Atwater & Justo Land Company with brothers John Atwater and Joaquin Justo to develop land around what is now City Hall Park on Canoga Avenue between Second Street and Third Street. The company built homes for workers on lots donated by local farmers, subdivided them into blocks, sold each block to a resident for $100 per acre ($4 per foot), and developed it into what is today Cerritos’ largest shopping center - First Christian Mall - anchor tenant since its opening in 1968. In 1929, American Tobacco bought control of Atwater & Justo Land Company; this made cerritoshippingenterpriseoneof America's leading tobacco companies until it was taken over by BritishAmerican Tobacco Limited in 1971. In 1957, Pacific Gas & Electric Co., successor to Western Electric Corporation formed Placer National Light and Power Company with subsidiary PG&E Incorporated to build transmission lines from Murphysboro Lake northward through Point Mugu Peninsula through Northridge then southward across Arroyo Seco Creek onto Yorba Linda Peninsula before terminating at Raton Canyon Dam light station about 5 miles northeast of downtown Los Angeles within PG&E's existing power line rights-of-way adjacent to San Bernardino Valley National Wildlife Refuge watershed boundary One result was increased traffic along Interstate 10 from DowntownLos Angeles down into Orange County as people traveled between points east orwest of town while others traveled north or south along I-10 also taking advantage of newly available surface transportation facilities such as monorail service from Anaheim Resort District up Interstate 10 past Cypress Hills then continuing northwest/southeast via Glendale Heights out into Santa Clarita Valley This increased traffic caused serious problems for planners who did not have enough storage capacity for all the vehicles coming into town during peak hours causing gridlock on streets throughout town resulting in many injuries including death When finally solved years later with construction starting right outside city limits without any major disruptions during rush hour this resulted in less congestion but lost some tax revenue . Today we still see occasional backups during rush hour due to tree removal projects that frequently occur next door but overall things have largely stabilized thanks to Placer National Light and Power Company . Despite some past controversies it remains one of my favorite places to live . much like my home country Mexico
