The name "Chino" comes from two Mexican words: "chinya" meaning 'hilly' and "hills" because they stand high on either side of a river valley (the Santa Monica Mountains). The history of Chino Hills began with Rancho Cucamonga Mission (1495), founded by Franciscan friars David Ispas and Juan Bautista de Anza on November 17, 1776 near present-day Encinal Avenue and Richards Road east of what is now downtown Chino Hills. Rancho Cucamonga Mission failed due to disease and abandonment in 1800; however, an adobe chapel remains today at 2118 N Richards Road which still serves as evidence that some residents continued to visit there even after their rancho failed. The Chino Hills, California town was founded in 1859 by Mexican immigrants, who named it after the Chino Hills in Northern California. It was located on the border of Southern and Northern California and became a stop on the stagecoach route from San Francisco to Sacramento. The town experienced growth during the Gold Rush era thanks to its location and its access to water resources. In 1870, the town was renamed East Chino Hills after local landowner Elisha Alvarado. From 1870 until 1911, East Chino Hills was part of Los Angeles County. In 1911, East Chino Hills became part of Pasadena County and lost its status as a stop on Stagecoach Road. Today, East Chino Hills is a small community with about 350 residents.
