Chino Hills is a city in southern California, United States. The population was 53,387 at the 2010 census. It is the second most populous city in Orange County after Anaheim and it is also one of the most ethnically diverse cities in the country. In 1819, Mexican land grantee José Alvarado named Chino Hills after his father-in-law, Manuel Nieto de la Torre y Costilla. A year later, Costilla sold part of his holdings to John Sutter for $2 million. In 1827, Sutter founded the town of Northridge on what he acquired from Nieto de la Torre. In 1847–48, American General George Armstrong Custer fought at San Fernando Valley Campaign near Chino Hills during the Mexican-American War. After Custer's death at Little Bighorn in1876, local residents erected a small tribute to him at what is now Custer Park in nearby La Habra Heights with a bronze statue by Augustus Saint-Gaudens that still stands today

The school changed its name to California State University at Long Beach in 1951 after it merged with CSU Fullerton. In 1963, CSU Long Beach merged with UC Riverside to form UC Riverside-Long Beach. Today, UC Riverside-Long Beach is one of the leading universities in California and continues to serve the community by providing quality education and research opportunities. The history of Chino Hills is rich with stories about people who have lived here and made a significant impact on its growth and development. Many of these individuals are remembered through local festivals and events that take place throughout the year.
Chino Hills was a small town located in southern San Bernardino County, California. It was established in 1887 andInitially it was a part of the Rancho Santa Margarita Mexican land grant given to Manuel Nieto. The post office at Chino Hills opened on December 4, 1888. The first school in Chino Hills was opened in 1895 by Mrs. J.F. McConnell and classes were held at home until 1903 when the first building became known as the School House No. 2 which still stands today on Main Street. In 1912, the town expanded eastward with the arrival of Roy Sells from Redlands and his family who founded Sells & Sons Hardware Store on Main Street The First Methodist Episcopal Church (now Holy Name Catholic Church) was built in 1923 In 1929, an express railroad came through Chino Hills making it one of the earliest towns to have its own train station The commercial development started with Wernham's Drug store opening in 1935 In 1952, Local 811 of the United Mine Workers (UMW) went on strike against management over financial mismanagement On October 12, 1957, a tornado touched down near Chino Hills and damage occurred throughout much of what is now Southern San Bernardino County
