This railway put an end to cattle drives down the peninsula and made it possible for people living nearCPUP power plants and other industrial plants to get jobs close by. On February 14, 1899, during World War I American troops marched into town under orders from General John Pershing as part of their drive against Mexican forces inside California. As they approached Main Street there was a loud explosion which scared off most of the civilian population who ran into their homes or hid behind fences while soldiers unlimbered cannons on horseback began firing at random into the night sky; no one was killed or injured but this event marked one of history's first military exercises within U.S.-controlled territory since Mexico had become a republic two years earlier. The first post office opened in 1905 with four settlers named Fenton, Lewisohns, Smith (husband of my grandmother), Haggerty (and wife) opening up what would be called "the little village" next door to where CPUP's huge electric plant now stands just north of present-day Main Street between Veteran Boulevard and Aviation Drive today). They served until 1907 when Desert Trails No 7 became Post Office #1 due to its location adjacent to CPUP Tracks/Roads main line making it easier for mail delivery serviceUrlognizing that even though many small businesses operated out front there would never be enough room inside main building so name changed back around 1908 when original building opened
