In 1853 two brothers named Sweeny came westward with twenty three head of cattle following Doniphan’s route through Mono Pass through today’s Antelope Valley across today’s Simi Valley to join General Kearney’s army marching down the Central Valley Campaign against Mexico under Governor Alvarado arriving at Yuma on February 14th where he shared quarters with Commodore Perry learning about Mexican intentions towards North America during that pivotal era! Thereafter Doniphan returned eastward via Bakewell Road then southwesterly along present day US 101 until striking “the great [Crescent] Mountain range just east of Redding Junction where he camped for five daysbrandishing his brand new horsemanship rifle which had been recently acquired from Gen[eral] Kearney himself! This event documented one of many important confrontations between American soldiers and Mexican forces during this time period leading up to American victory at Buena Vista Cemetery some 25 miles due north near present day Rancho Mirage Nevada! It also served notice back East that we are not going away quietly any time soon!!” Another early settler was Capt.[ain] James Fenton who claimed land northeast of present day Fillmore Avenue/Pleasant Grove Boulevard on January 15th, 1852 after leaving his previous advocation mission to outfit wagon trains ferrying supplies up Old Spanish Canyon way finding no water or passes available nearer than six miles so made an encampment therewith improving fences around small stream bed adjoining group homestead site reported by Joseph Bradley dated March 2nd but never honored as such… further exploration revealed lone Butte Creek flowing southeast about three miles between Chavez Flat Top Point off current Pleasant Grove Blvd./Pleasant Grove Boulevard past current Reseda Verde Park ending near old Eureka Mine Road now called Hillcrest Drive/Valley View Dr.) later renamed Fillmore Ave./Pleasant Grove Blvd.) name changed again May 10th 1850 when area became part of large Rancho Seco estate owned by Jesse Livermore after partitioning largest share among several partners including Captain Fenton plus 300 rancheros already living here since grantee granted Apr 3rd 1850 mainly due Tojelico Gulch road being Surveyed & improved by Capt[ain], Lt Col Hearn extending northeast most all eventually surveyed & patented Jan 6th 1860 Dirt roads built mostly by men only accessible Via dirt driveways Gullible Rowlands) etc.). Today much remains unchanged only population has decreased over 40% since 1990 although community retains strong cultural identity having numerous annual events throughout year unique to its unique history!)
