In 1847, California became a U.S. Territory when Mexico ceded it to the United States. The area that is now Corona was part of Rancho San Joaquin de Borrego, which was part of the Mexican grant system. In 1848, the U.S. government awarded Rancho San Joaquin de Borrego to James Irvine, who in turn granted it to David Tejon in 1850. The first recorded mention of Corona comes from a deed from Captain John Crespi on June 15, 1795, which notes that he has agreed "to sell and convey unto you for messuage and pasturage one hundred acres of land near this place called Corona." The first permanent settler in what is now Corona was David Tejon, who arrived in 1851 and bought the land from Captain John Crespi for $800. He built his home at present-day Main Street and named it La Posta (the post). In 1865, he sold his share in La Posta to Juana Arana y Pacheco for $1400 cash plus two cows and four horses. Tejon died in 1886 but left behind a ranch that still operates today as Tejon National Forest
