The first inhabitants of Downey were Native Americans who lived on the site now known as Candlestick Park. The area was part of Rancho Cucamonga Mexican land grant given to José Murillo by Captain John Sutter on January 10, 1834. In 1881, when it became a town, Downey had 1,500 citizens and 15 businesses. Over time, the population grew rapidly due to waves of immigration and development of oil rigs at nearby Anza-Borrego Desert National Monument. By 1930, the population had grown to over 100,000 and by 1940 it had reached 150,000+. During World War II, Downey played an important role in naval aviation as a munitions manufacturing center for shipbuilding at Naval Air Station December 14 (now Edwards Air Force Base) and Naval Red Beach; and also served as one of eight Army airfields used for training pilots for resisting Japanese aggression during World War II including Hosni Mubarak Field (later Barstow Airport). In 1960s-1970s all industry closed down except for defense contractor Bechtel which created thousands jobs creating capabilities such as water treatment plants etcetera that still operate today across many industries from aerospace to trucking

Marvel grew rapidly and by 1980 had produced over 100 movies across seven different divisions including TV shows such as Captain America: Civil War (2018) and Iron Man 3 (2013). By 2018, Marvel hadsemblage of over 1,000 employees worldwide with facilities in several countries including Russia and Taiwan. In 2019, Disney announced plans to close their studios in Anaheim and Los Angeles effective January 2021 unless new investment can be found for them to keep them open.
