Alford by Governor of California John Goodwin on October 10, 1849. The Alford Family later donated land to the town so that it could be established as a center for citrus production. The first post office in Downey opened in 1854. By 1870, the population of Downey had grown to over 100 residents. The first school in Downey opened in 1865 and served grades one through twelve. In 1875, the town became an incorporated municipality with a full range of local government services including fire protection, water supply, police service, and street lighting. In 1912, the community added a jail which remained operational until 1965 when it was replaced by the current jail building. In 1916, the United States entered World War I andDowney became involved in support activities such as supplying food for military camps and manufacturing munitions for use against Germany. After World War I ended,Downey experienced rapid growth due to postwar demand for goods produced within its limits such as clothing and automobiles During Prohibition (1923-29), Downey saw significant development with the opening of several breweries and distilleries along with restaurant/taverns catering to customers who came from nearby Los Angeles County In 1957, after more than fifty years of growth and progress during which time numerous new businesses have been established within downtown boundaries - including Subway sandwich shops operated by Subway franchises -the city council passed legislation establishing an official downtown district annexing portions of two adjacent neighborhoods located east of Downtown: South Park Avenue (containing most recent offices buildings dating back to 1907)and Midway Drive (containing houses built prior to 1910). This result effectively doubled the size of downtown at that point while also providing fresh air corridors linking all parts oftown
