Downey is an unincorporated community in Los Angeles County, California. It is located on the eastern edge of the San Fernando Valley, east of downtown Los Angeles. Downey was founded in 1887 by James and Anna Downey as a small farming town located near the present-day intersection of Sepulveda Boulevard and Laurel Canyon Boulevard. The Downeys were among the first settlers in what would become Los Angeles County. In 1925, Anna Downs died at the age of ninety-six after a long and fruitful life as one of Southern California's most powerful women. James Downs continued to live until his death in 1942 at the age of eighty-four. The original town site was home to only a few hundred people, but it soon became popular for its beautiful location, fertile soil, and lucrative agricultural products. After years of growth and development, Downey annexed neighboring communities (such as Westwood) in 1928 to form what is now one of Southern California's most populous communities. The village—which still retains its smalltown feel—soon began becoming known for its famous shopping districts: Koreatown to the north, Sylmar to the west, Hollywood Heights to the south/southwest, and Culver City to the southeast (all within walking distance). Today Downey remains an important community with strong cultural ties throughout southern California; it has been host to numerous annual events including Jazzfestivals throughout Southern California each year since 1978 (), The Academy Awards® (the Oscars), a holiday parade (), summer movie screenings (including several blockbusters ), classical concerts (), tennis tournaments (), beauty pageants (). Downey is a small town in the San Gabriel Mountains of southern California, about an hour's drive from Los Angeles. It was founded in 1887 by John Downey and his family as a post office called "Hollywood". The first postmaster was Dr. J.M. Simonds. Downey became a census-designated place in 1990 and has since been home to many famous people, including Bob Hope, Ronald Reagan, and Clint Eastwood. The first factory in Downey was the Earhart Sawmill, built in 1903 by George Earhart and his brother Don for their father's property discoveries on the edge of town. In 1905, Hollywood film producer Harry Cohn bought the Earhart Sawmill and began producing films there such as "The Jazz Singer". The Hearst Corporation bought the sawmill in 1929 and beganproducing films such as "Chinatown" and "My Cousin Vinny". In 1943, Hollywood star Clark Gable moved to Downey from Palmdale to be closer to his wifewire company Fox Film Corporation's production facilities at Twentynine Palms (then known as Southern Pacific). After leaving Fox Film Corporation he became involved with other businesses including AFI Films which produced "For Whom The Bell Tolls" (1949), then United Artists which produced "Gone With the Wind" (1939) for Warners Pictures; MGM also distributed these productions through its subsidiary Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. His last feature film appearance came in 1957 with an appearance opposite Bette Davis in MGM’s “How To Marry A Millionaire†. After Gable's death at age 508 on December 12, 1957 , many of his former friends gathered at Fox Studios for cremation ceremonies at Valley View Cemetery but only three photos were taken: one of him with Joan Crawford before she married Fred Astaire; one of him being pallbearers for her husband at her funeral; one of her viewing after her death six months later
Downey was founded by John Downey in 1877. The town is named after him and his father, who also helped found the city. Downey became an important center for the citrus industry and its economy grew rapidly during the late 1800s and early 1900s. In 1915, it became a city and was named one of the most vibrant cities in California.
