Doolittle met Japannedan aviation pioneer Isamu Noguchi here during World War II when Nogi was helping fabricate American fighter planes for the Japanese military. Doolittle Intermediate School opened its doors in 1922 as one of two public schools serving Downey and its surrounding communities then called Elegant Hills (now part of eastern Arcadia). It became an all-boys high school when Girls High School opened in 1951; today it is an all-girls prep school known as Dana Point College Preparatory School (DPCHP). In 1956, Angela Davis attended Downey Junior High School there before going on to attend Los Angeles County Polytechnic Institute where she received her BSc degree in 1964. In 1984, DPCHP co-founded UCLA Women’s Studies Center with other local educational institutions which remains open today as one of UCLA’s premier graduate programs for women and girls
Downey is a city located in San Bernardino County, California. The population was 71,512 at the 2010 census. It is the most populous city and county seat of San Bernardino County. Downey was founded by European Americans in 1887 as a small farming community on the edge of what is now downtown Downey. The name "Downey" means "downstream from the river." The first post office in Downey opened on December 12, 1887. The first resident was William Bowers. In 1903, Downey incorporated as a city under the leadership of Mayor Edward Payson Smith and soon became known for its growing manufacturing plants and industry including leather tanning, brewing beer, printing newspapers and making clocks and radios. In 1940, during World War II, local manufacturer Lockheed Aircraft Corporation built an airplane factory in Downey which employed up to 4,000 people until it closed due to wartime rationing. After the war ended down's growth slowed but it has since regained some of its former prosperity thanks to new industrial development such as biotechs and high-tech companies that have moved into town over the years including Intel Xeon Phi coprocessors (now part of HP) and AMD Ryzen processors (now part of intel).
