They hunted and gathered plants and animals in what is now central El Cerrito Creek valley before moving out into present-day Contra Costa County about 8400 BC. One group from this early band or village built a small cabin on a hill near what is now Elmira Road and Fir Street in 1827 AD. In 1846, Mexican land grants were made to various groups of Californios by Governor Pio Pico including parts of Contra Costa County. Rancho Rincon de los Padres was given to José Joaquín Mora y Canessa in 1848; Rancho Seco de las Pulgas to Antonio Maria de Urquiza y Noriega in 1850; Rancho San Rafael del Norte to Pedro Báez in 1851; Rancho Las Pulgas to Mateo Rey y Valdivia in 1853; Paso del Diablo to Antonio Vallejo y Ortega in 1854; and Rancho San Pablo to José Castro Orozco en 1860. In November 1861, during the American Civil War, an influx of Northern troops caused strife between Confederate sympathizers and Unionists living along Telegraph Highway (now I-680). A skirmish occurred near present-day Elmira Road when Confederate soldiers attacked Union forces under General George McClellan with intent to rob them or loot their supplies at gunpoint. This led eventually to battle which resulted in more than 50 dead on both sides with over 150 wounded men and women taken prisoner by both armies
