Farmersville was founded in 1885 by George and Emma Snively. The Snively family had started a farm on the corner of Second and Elm Streets in 1876. In 1886, the Snively family sold their farm to J.W. Boynton who named it for his father-in-law, James Boynton, who had settled in Farmersville in 1865. The Boynton family operated the farm until 1959 when it was sold to the Giannini family. In 1932, Mrs. Giannini donated land for a public school in Farmersville which became known as Stonington Elementary School. In 1984, the school was renamed Farmersville Middle School after Mrs. Giannini's son, Dick Giannini, who served as its first superintendent from 1984 to 1992. On May 14th of each year since 1978, farmersvillians have enjoyed a parade through their town with floats and marching bands
The first Europeans to visit Farmersville were the Spanish in 1769. The area that is now Farmersville was part of Rancho San Pablo, a Mexican land grant given to Juan Bautista Menéndez in 1823. By 1848, the US had acquired the entire rancho, and it was renamed Rancho California. In 1850, two men named George Armstrong and Jesse Pickett founded what is today known as Armstrong's Store on First Street in Farmersville. The store became a significant local center for goods and services until it closed its doors in 1964. In 1852, John Cranch discovered gold near present-day Fillmore City. A group of Californian miners followed Cranch's discovery and began prospecting for gold in what is now Farmersville. On November 26, 1853, General Mariano Castro issued an order authorizing the founding of townships at Fillmore City and Folsom Wells within California's newly created Donner Party territory east of Sacramento River. The townships were named after distinguished Californian leaders: David Sutter (Folsom), John Woolley (Fillmore), James Hance (Lodi). Farming products were key to early Settlers' diets, so farmers built their earliest dwellings around barns and other buildings used for storage or production purposes. By 1870, there existed about sixty farms with six hundred head of livestock producing several thousand acres of crops and hay alone. On October 10th 1898 - one month after California gained statehood - settlers from nearby Marysville arrived at what is now the intersection of First Avenue and Main Street in Farmersville to begin building a new town called Marysville annexe which would be annexed into Farmersville on October 12th 1898
