The Half Moon Bay Gunnery School was founded in 1872 by Captain John B. Hinkle with the goal of providing “a course in gunnery and seamanship, for Officers of Marine Forces and their families.” The first school was located on the wharf at present day Main Street, half a mile from the current location of the Maritime Museum. In 1875, Captains Hinkle, Wolin (later Commodore George Washington) and others purchased land at what is now Midtown to build a permanent school. Classes began on September 25th, 1875 with twenty students enrolled. A new Academy building was erected in 1898 using funds raised by local citizens during a special election held to finance this project. In 1916, Captains Edward J. Smith and John Larkin purchased land adjacent to the present day Half Moon Bay Marina which they dedicated as an Naval Weapons Station where Marines could train to fight in World War I. This station functioned as both training ground and storage area for Navy weapons ships until 1922 when it became an Army Air Corps field airfield known as General Mitchell Field after General James Fiske Mitchell who served as Commanding Officer from 1941-1945 during World War II. After World War II ended, the airfield passed through several hands before it came under control of the Coast Guard in 1951 which used it for various purposes including offshore oil exploration until its closure in 1960. On October 6th, 1966 Captain Harry Covington took command of USS Half Moon Bay (CG-5) from Captain William Gordanon aboard USS Enterprise (CVN-65). CG-5 patrolled off Southern California waters conducting search and rescue missions during Operation Neptune's Spear which saw over 150 people lost when their boat went down near Point Conception Island on July 30th 1967 while operating within five miles of shoreline pursuant to United States Navy Regulations then governing such operations! During his tenure as commanding officer of USS Half Moon Bay (CG-5), Captain Covington led team efforts that included participation in searches for victims of shipwreckages off Northern California; participated in Exercise Mesa Verde; conductedOperation Coral Sea;assisted USS Enterprise(CVN 65) during her shakedown cruise off Long Beach;and posed for a photo opportunity commemorating 50 years since America had become involved in World War II!.
