Half Moon Bay has been inhabited by successive waves of Coast Miwoks who were followed by the Pomo people in the late 19th century. In 1844, Spanish soldiers founded Mission Santa Clara de la Laguna on what is now Half Moon Bay after arriving from Baja California to fight Mexico's Gadsden War against Mexican forces led by General Antonio López de Santa Anna.mission Santa Clara de la Laguna had six missions under its jurisdiction: Monterey (1844), Guadalupe (1846), Point Reyes (1850), Loreto (1852), Nisenah (1854) and La Jolla (1856). Franciscan friars established two more missions—San José de las Alturas and Concepción—on June 14, 1857, following the Mexican-American War which ended with Ulysses S Grant's victory over Mexico at Monterrey. Much of today's Half Moon Bay was developed as part of an agricultural community that grew rapidly during World War II due to military housing projects built around Navy shipyards and airfields in nearby San Bruno and Milpitas. The Half Moon Bay area played an important role in early California history. The region was first settled by the Tongva people, who lived north of the San Francisco Peninsula. In 1769, when British colonists arrived in California, they encountered the Tongva and decided to move them out of the way so that they could develop their new land. In 1821, a group of men from as far away as Oregon set out on a wagon ride to find a new home for the American population in California. They reached Half Moon Bay on April 17 and founded Stockton, California. The town was named after Mount half-moon, which overlooked the bay. In 1846, during the Mexican-American War, General José Joaquin de la Cueva attacked and destroyed Fort Point at Half Moon Bay. This event is commemorated by a monument located at the western end of town. The fort had been built to protect ships embarking from Mexico City to Alta California. After Californias admission into US union in 1850, many families left Stockton for San Francisco because of its advantages over other cities in terms of land availability and education opportunities. By 1860, only about 10% of residents were still Anglo-Saxon Americans; most were Mexican immigrants or those descended from Mexican immigrants. By 1865 Half Moon Bay was known as "the biggest gold rush town on earth." Many prospectors came to this region specifically looking for gold rather than silver because silver sources were much harder to come by than gold deposits near Sacramento and San Francisco proper (which also produced more silver). A small community developed around Mission Dolores (founded in 1795) due to its strategic location between Mission Creek Road and Gold Rush prospects near Daly City and Richmond Hill; it prospered until 1851 when mining operations stopped due mainly to low grades of ore relative to nearby lead reefs mined elsewhere along the coast
