The Half Moon Bay Shooting Sports Foundation (HSBF) was founded in 1946 as the first shooting sports organization in the San Francisco Bay Area. The HSBF is a nonprofit, educational, and advocacy group that promotes safe and responsible firearms use through education and enforcement of firearm laws. In 1977, the HSBF became an affiliate member of the National Rifle Association (NRA). Today, the HSBF provides more than 350 programs for gun owners statewide. In 1947, after years of development work by several groups within NRA headquarters including members of Congress intent on passing effective safety measures for Americans using guns for hunting and target shooting activities outside their homes/yards/, NRA Executive Vice President Harry S Truman signed into law “The National Firearms Act” which set forth specific requirements for rifle manufacturers importing new firearms into America including specific requirements for eye protection devices known as “firearm sights” or “firearm sights system”(FSS). These provisions required all rifle manufacturers shipping pistols and revolvers over 1 inch bore to include a rear sight capable of hitting a moving target at 100 meters (328 feet), an aperture less than 3/8 inch wide opening at least 20 degrees above horizontal ground level measured perpendicularly thereto (), a front sight providing positive sighting power against blurring due to atmospheric conditions not exceeding 18 mph (29 km/h) (), a trigger guard protecting fingers from accidental movement of the trigger while holdng & firing projectiles (), a permanently attached Hale & Weinstock windage & elevation adjustments tool measuring 2 inches round diameter with 10 adjustable settings (.5-.15 milimeters), an integral bipod device having two legs extending outwardly beyond barrel muzzle end ., buttplate covered with soft rubber stop pad preventing kickback while fired (). With these restrictions in place, manufacturers producing handguns starting February 27th 1951 had 60 days to comply before they were subject to import duties and taxes equal to 25% of their newly established product price plus $30 per item exported plus 6% whichever figure was greater* (* Product prices did not change until July 9th 1956 when Gun Control Acts were passed.) After the war ended, many more people moved here including some of Silicon Valley's early entrepreneurs such as Bob Woodward and Robert Wiesenthal In 1957 construction began on Highway 101 which connected Half Moon Bay with Marin County's other towns: Sausalito (west), Tiburon (east), Prunedale (north), Rossville (south) and Northwood (west). The mainline road was completed in 1960 but most residents continued to drive along old Route 1 until recently when new expressways have been constructed nearby making Highway 101 unnecessary except for occasional scenic drives by drivers seeking views of Healdsburg or Bergamot Creek from their homes Half moon bay has seen growth over the years due largely to commuting opportunities available now that western Marin County has easy access both east-west and north-south onto I-5 . With growth comes increased traffic noise from various businesses near Highway 101 . Some local officials are working towards creating a "quiet" half moon bay where only tourists or special events are allowed while others continue efforts towards preserving rural character while inviting more development
