Hawaii Gardens, California is a small town located in the county of Santa Clara, California. The population was 3,481 at the 2010 census. It is part of the San Francisco Bay Area. The name Hawaii Gardens may be derived from "Hawaii" and "gardens," or its place of origin could be Hawaiian Garden Creek which flows through the town. The first recorded settlement on what is now called Hwy 101 was made by Captain James Cook on his 1779 journey to Polynesia and back. In 1864, John Sutter founded Sutter's Mill in Hawaii Gardens when he discovered gold nears the mill site. In 1924, President Coolidge leased an approximately acre parcel of land between State Route 101 (now Alameda Street) and Walnut Avenue from David Wesselsland for use as a golf course during World War I and again during World War II (he also leased additional property north of SR 101). Today's Hawaii Garden Golf Course opened in 1926-27 with 8 holes.....................The course has been enlarged numerous times over the years.........Today it offers 9 holes including 4 par 5s...............This unique golf course is adjacent to beautiful freshwater ponds stocked with fish including a 34-foot long Rainbow trout stream running through center of park......A replica lighthouse stands off limits to beginners while experienced players can tee off at 2 miles distance from another replica lighthouse.........These lighthouses have been reconstructed using original materials..........There are also several pavilion buildings......It should be noted that today only about 10% Of Hawai'ian Tiki Bar & Grill clients come here.............Most people who visit this place spend their time playing golf or swimming............As you drive along Hwy 101 you will see nearly every house withinClose view.......Many were built by local builders who sewed their homes together with piecemeal lumber they got from various timber yards around town while others were erected primarily with adobe bricks which were then whitewashed......... Many structures still stand today...........................On one side of town are most popular shopping areas such as Safeway, Lowes, Costco and JCPenney; opposite are mostly residential neighborhoods where many families live......Today there are few if any businesses left other than some independent restaurants.......Restaurants like Hawai'ian Tiki Bar & Grill closed down due to financial difficulties in early 2019..................One significant development recently taking place in Hawai'ian Gardens is the arrival of several new comprehensive high school students each day who help out with landscaping and general maintenance...........Japanese Music Academy (), started by two parents whose son had difficulty getting into college because he couldn't afford tuition has since become one of Hawai'ian Gardens biggest boosters
