Hermosa Beach, California is a coastal town in Orange County, California on the Pacific Ocean. It is located about north of Newport Beach and south of Costa Mesa. The population was 16,755 at the 2010 census. The first people to live in what is now Hermosa Beach were Native Americans who inhabited the area from before 1821 to 1836. They called the beach "Miawatha."[1] In 1853, a group of American soldiers under General Winfield Scott traveled through Orange County and stopped at Miawatha for lunch on July 10th. After their meal, they named the spot after General Scott's headquarters in San Francisco - henceforth known as "Miawatha". In 1860, when Ventura County was created from parts of Los Angeles and Santa Barbara counties, Hermosa Beach became one of its first municipalities. On November 3rd 1870 (the day after Ventura County was formed), Mayor John Sayers delivered an address to the citizens of Hermosa Beach condemning Captain Richard Perry's seizure of two vessels bound for Californication without authority from that county or any other.[2] Captain Perry had been sailing through Los Angeles Strait with his ship Thetis while trying to catch a trade wind which would have enabled him to reach his destination more quickly. In 1871 Leland Stanford founded Stanford University in Palo Alto on land he had bought from Juan Bautista de Anza near Ferndale Ranch east of Palo Alto;[3][4][5] as part of this settlement he also acquired 640 acres (252 hectares) around present-day Hermosa Beach where he built a grove of trees then named it Stanfords Park after himself and his wife CarolineStanford – later changing it to campus park following passage by Congress in 1888 giving Stanford perpetual ownership over all Campus property outside Palo Alto.[6][7][8] As part of this deal Stanford agreed not to sell any parcels within city limits except those adjacent thereto along E Street between Point Lobos Avenue and Power Road – thus providing much needed open space for development inland then current City Limits. On December 12th 1893 Pixley Mathers born October 26th 1865 died August 25th 1942 was an American writer best known for her books Grapes Of Wrath and A Great Wave off Redondo Pier which are set during World War I aboard an ocean liner which sinks off Redondo Pier California Famous lines written by Mathers are “I threw open my door/And saw them coming/Like Death itself” [from Grapes Of Wrath], “I stepped out into Destroyer Bay/And there they were /Red Hull down below!/Agreat white horde!/They stormed up my stair case/And I fled screaming back inside!” [from A Great Wave Off Redondo Pier].
