Highland, California is a small town in San Bernardino County, California. The population was 24,711 at the 2010 census. Highland is located on Interstate 5 and east of Downtown Los Angeles. It is bordered to the north by Ontario National Forest and to the west by Rialto Mountain Park. The first European settlers in what is now Highland were Missionaries who arrived in 1769. They named their new settlement after Mount Baldy in North Carolina where one of their number had been killed while fighting for independence from Spain. In 1851, gold was discovered nearby and soon people from all over were seeking it out. By 1861 there were more than 1,000 residents living hereabouts. In 1872, a post office was established at Highland with James Wolk as its first supervisor. This location would later become the seat of the San Bernardino County government and remain so until 1961 when it moved to Riverside because of cheap land prices in that area relative to other parts of Southern California. The earliest industries here included agriculture (the production of hay, oats and barley), smelting copper ore into coins or jewelry pieces and tanning hides into leather; however, these days only a few farms produce commodities such as fruits or vegetables anymore due to changing weather patterns or competition from other businesses near downtown LA or Riverside proper which are larger and have higher-paying jobs that allow for farmers to stay afloat during tough times like this one. A fire destroyed most of what remained of the old mill complex southeast of town on October 14th 1898 just before harvest time leaving an estimated $1 million worth damages behind including five miles long stacks of gear still waiting to be carted away today! A new mill complex began construction shortly thereafter but never finished because funding dried up following World War II while demand for aluminum products plummeted due largely to advances made by Japan in vehicles during the war years like tanks etcetera!
