After several years of construction,mission Father Juniper built his first farmhouse there in 1772. Today's building was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1978. In 1846, Mexican American pioneer José Altamirano bought land near present-day Highland and began developing it into a rancho (a Rancho Niguel type property). He named his rancho La Paloma because he saw an eagle flying over his land during one of his visits to the area. After some successful farming operations, Altamirano sold La Paloma to James Wickersham for $15 per acre in 1854. Wickersham turned it into one of California's richest ranches with over 2 million acres under cultivation as late as 1940s.. In 1885 Hollywood movie star William Sennettnick filmed scenes for his film "The Virginians" at Altamirano's ranchoLa Paloma before setting up shop on nearby Vine Street in downtown LOS ANGELES.. After William Sennettnick's death in 1916 Hollywood producer/director Metro Goldwyn Mayer bought La Paloma from Wickersham for $25 million dollars and renamed it MGM Studios..MGM made movies such as "A Star Is Born", " Dangerous Liaisons" etc... until its bankruptcy during the 1990s ..McDonalds started serving food at MGM Studios around this time too
Highland, California was first settled in 1847 by James Irvine and his family. The town of Highland was founded on the site of an old mission. In 1876, the San Francisco earthquake destroyed much of downtown but left Highland standing. The city annexed the town in 1907. Highland is now a census-designated place (CDP) within the San Francisco Bay Area
