Japanese planes destroyed most of Naval Base #1 but some personnel from nearby Isla Vista beach managed to escape unharmed while others took refuge aboard Enterprise which continued operations until 1945. In 1957 when Interstate 5 was extended through Orange County it bisected Imperial Beach making it one of only a few US cities that did not experience any change with its downtown area remaining largely unchanged since then despite numerous interruptions like major storms that have hit this region over time including 2011's Storm surge event which flooded streets near Downtown El Centro resulting in $100 million in damage). In 1990s development along I-5 led to increased traffic congestion around Torrance Mesa creating a need for a new military installation just east of town that would become Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton or MCBP for short while also providing jobs directly related to Navy Seal activity along with access into neighboring counties for fuel company employees Teresa Park Drive Business Park opened up just east of I-5 within minutes after developers obtained approval from Caltrans - now part of UC Riverside - allowing businesses wanting access onto I-5 outside of Downtown El Centro which they could do without affecting traffic flow or causing pollution

In 1870, the first white person to set foot on Imperial Beach was Fenton Dickinson. The town began as a small agricultural community and soon became a popular spot for boating, fishing, and swimming. In 1916, the City of Imperial Beach was established and the town became part of its jurisdiction. In 1949, the State of California purchased most of the uninhabited beach south of Newport Beach from the federal government in order to create an exclusive military zone. In 1959, state legislators created a civic center in honor of Admiral Chester Nimitz and renamed it Naval Base Santa Ana. The base closed in 1992 after Navy personnel were accused of sexual assault against civilian women there.
