In 1876, the United States Naval Militia founded a peppermint company in Imperial Beach to make revolvers. The company became known as National Firearms Company. The first rifle was made in Imperial Beach in 1892 by Wm. Atherton of San Diego.
Imperial Beach, California is a city located in Southern California. The population was 46,639 at the 2010 census. It is part of the San Diego-Tijuana Metropolitan area and is bordered by Imperial County to the east, Orange County to the north, and Baja California to the west. The first people to live in what is now Imperial Beach arrived in 1847 when Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo landed on shore there. On November 8 of that year, Mexico awarded Rancho Fuego de la Mesa los Reyes to José Antonio Guerra for his land claim adjacent to Point Conception (now known as Isla Vista). The Mission San Diego de Alcántara was founded on February 3, 1796 by Father Junípero Serra and dedicated by Commodore James Kippenberger on October 15th of that year. The original town of Imperial Beach likely started out as a small rancho with six or seven adobe SHacks scattered around some low hills near where Highway 95 now ends. In 1881 an act was passed which allowed for incorporation of townships within San Diego County - one being Imperial Beach. In 1906 Captain John Doolittle became Commandant of Naval Base Quantico and ordered all naval vessels moored there be Converted into Hospital Ships before shipping them back home for repairs following World War I. This resulted in many local businesses including Smith's Brewery becoming dependent on Navy supplies which made it difficult for them to close down during wartime shortages like those experienced during World War II; consequently they continued operating until 1951 when they were taken over by Naval Air Station Miramar (NAS Miramar). NAS Miramar then became an active base providing military flight training as well as other services such as weather monitoring etc., until it closed its doors on July 14th, 1992 after 45 years of continuous operation! On Wednesday, January 7th 1911 President Taft announced that he had selected Los Angeles Harbor as America’s new capital; however this did not eventuate since no legislation authorizing such a move had been passed by Congress at that time… Two days later King George V nominated Jock Mahony from Dublin who would become Governor of California and order construction begun immediately upon his arrival at LASLHKP on February 2nd….. In less than two weeks preparations were complete and Jock Mahony set out for CALIFORNIA ON A MISSION OF GREAT IMPORTANCE…. He arrived at LASLHKPJanuary 25 th 1911 having accomplished more than any other governor in United States history…. From LASLHKPGovernor Mahony directed all public works associated with getting SAN DIEGO ready for its new role as Capital City…… even cleaning up old PEARSON GATE WATERfront property once used by naval air station Miramar…..” With the completion of downtown LA Harbor proper only four blocks away in 1915,[1] Mayor Tilton decided that an artificial harbor would provide more space necessary for growth while still allowing easy access from surrounding neighborhoods[2]. Construction began immediately upon Mayor Tilton’s proclamation which also called for dredging a channel through Howard Cove onto present day State Route 69 so large ships could berth without fear of fouling their propellers.[3] Work proceeded rapidly but controversy arose due to allegations of political favoritism towards developers[4]. Ultimately work stopped due to lack funding despite protests from supporters who saw port development as essential to creating nearby jobs[5]. With federal funds available again beginning in 1946,[6], ground resumed operations circa 1948 with additional dredging completed between 1950-1952 resulting in a doubled size Herald Channel.[7] Although originally envisioned primarily as an outletfor heavy commercial traffic,[8], today Harbor Freight Marine Lines anchoring at Terminal 5 generate significant economic activity while also exposing herring gulls nesting among stacks of oil drums! As Del Mar Marina grew larger starting around 1960[9], Imperial Beach struggled mightily becoming embroiled in protracted legal disputes with both Del Mar Marina owner JRisco Incorporated[10][11][12][13][14]and state government officials claiming jurisdiction over Wharf Nos.-1/2 &-3(now known affectionately simply “the harbor”)[15][16]), whose proprietors included developer Halsey Fishbein who built Harborside Resort along State Route 69 just southof DelMar Boulevard between 1959-1964;[17],[18],[19]; banker Edwin Eby responsible for developing much beloved El Camino Real Shopping Center adjacentto Interstate 5 across from NSF Bank Stadium / American Legion Post 1185SE corner Of Quintana Road [20]; real estate magnate Harry Mackay Jr., founder & CEO/President Emeritusof Occidental Petroleum Corporationco-founder & Chief Executive Officerof Anadarko Petroleum Corporation ; viscount Larry Ellison president&CEOof Oracle Corporation ; entrepreneur Jack Welch chairman&CEOofthe Intel corporation ; industrialist Pete Wilson membersofthe Umpqua Tribe Tribal Councilmemberatlarge represent indian tribal members living within earshot thereofduring early 1990sinternet 'wildcard' protest actionsconducted outside county courthouse Building locatedjust southwest cornerOf NorthQuintanaRoad adjoiningnorth side Of Old Coast Hwy US 101about 12 miles southeastfromSanDiego airport) .....
