In World War II, Imperial Beach played an important role as a supply base for USS Bataan (LHD-2) which was sunk off shore during Operation Husky on Feb 28 1942. Thousands of sailors were lost when her crew could not find food or water as they sailed along Route 66 towards Baja California peninsula during their mission to retake Corregidor from Japan’s forces just prior to Pearl Harbor.. Following World War II ended there was much redevelopment including large projects like The Kaiser Chiefs motel which opened in 1951 followed by Jack London Square whichopened in 1957 bringing about much economic growth for the city center over ensuing years

The area now known as Imperial Beach was first populated by Native Americans. A group of Mexicans who had fled the Mexican Revolution settled in what is now Imperial Beach in 1892. The town was founded on a bluff overlooking the Pacific Ocean and started as a trade center for fishermen and merchants. In 1905, the city annexed parts of Del Norte County to become one large municipality. In 1938, the city banned smoking in public because it felt this was contributing to air pollution.
